ATLANTA SIGMA SHADOWS
The Atlanta Sigma Shadows wives and widows of the men of Lambda Sigma, Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. have withstood the test of time for sixty eight years. Under the leadership of Dr. George L. Hightower, R.O. Sutton and Richard A. Billings plans were set into action to foster involvement and support of families among Sigma wives and children. Catherine Johnson invited Sigma wives to her home to set the stage for what is now the Atlanta Sigma Shadows. In October 1946, the group was chartered and from this inception, many chapters were organized throughout the country. Thus becoming a national organization and a supportive group for the fraternity.
The purpose of the Sigma Shadow continues to be community oriented with focus on providing services, activities and entertainment for children with disabilities. Some past projects have been providing cloth- ing, toys, volunteer services, tutorial services in Atlanta Respite Pro- gram, Grady Memorial Hospital, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and E.L. Connally Elementary School. Several years, they adopted a family and provided food, clothing and toys for the children.
The Sigma Shadows have sponsored fund raising and social activities to support their community projects and social programs for themselves, their families and friends. On Saturday, October 25, 2014, they will celebrate and toast their founders. An evening of entertainment and festivities is planned. You are invited to come out and enjoy the evening with them.
They salute their founders: Margaret Anderson, Willie Mae Ashmore, Sadie Alexander, Celestine Billings, Florence Chamberlain, Alva Chappelle, Katie Daniels, Laura Dubose, Wyolyn Gray, Edna Hart, Susie Hightower, Anne Jackson, A. Catherine Johnson, Mamye Lock- hart, Gertrude Nelson, Anne Robinson, and Dorothy Wolfe … “ we salute you as we sing, ” Come all you Shadows; We must never fail, but always strive to keep the Sigma’s purpose alive.” If you want to attend, please contact Sis Margie Terry at Terrytyty@bellsouth.net or call her.
